United Civil is serving as the Prime Contractor for all Splicing Support activities on the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) project, a landmark HVDC transmission line from New York City to Lake Champlain. While completing the first 18 miles of CHPE’s underground ductbank and vault system, UC was selected by Transmission Developers Inc. (TDI) to manage and support the cable supplier, NKT, in the splicing of 500kV HVDC cable at 286 terrestrial splice locations along the ductbank route.
United Civil’s scope includes comprehensive field support for these splicing operations, including open pit excavation and backfilling as well as bathtub installations at respective splice locations. These bathtubs, engineered to house and protect the HVDC splice joints, are being placed and supported by UC crews in a wide variety of terrain types; the project geography spans dense urban streetscapes, active transportation corridors, environmentally sensitive zones and remote rural areas.
Along with our technical scopes, United Civil is providing logistical coordination, environmental compliance support, site access development, and close daily coordination with NKT and TDI. Our team’s focus is on safety, schedule integrity, and maintaining production across all splice locations on the CHPE route.
