United Civil was the site contractor for this new high school and community center complex in Cambridge, MA. Earthwork on the project included export of 45,000 tons of contaminated soil for the installation of a one-level underground parking garage and swimming pool. The scope also included import of 37,000 tons of material, installation of infrastructure improvements on the abutting roadways and support of excavation- which called for the installation of 500 lf of soldier piles and wooden lagging.
United Civil installed entirely new onsite utility infrastructure including a 30,000-gallon rainwater harvesting tank to store roof drain water for re-usage in restrooms, 25 manhole structures, 900 lf of utility piping and two underground drainage retention fields. United Civil’s scope also included roadwork and site improvements consisting of cold plane and overlay of the surrounding streets, rebuilding of brick crosswalks, installing 1100 lf of granite curbing and installing 2 new playgrounds and basketball courts. With mass excavation occurring 6+ feet below water level, the site required extensive dewatering throughout the project. Additional challenges included working on a logistically tight work site in an urban area, with areas of deep excavation.
